ATM Card Discontinuation FAQs

Ventura County Credit Union discontinued offering ATM cards on July 1, 2023. With advancements in technology, the credit union offers a safer means of making a withdrawal from your account through an ATM machine. Traditional ATM cards use a magnetic stripe located on the back of the card to read account information. This magnetic stripe is less secure than an EMV chip or Tap, which encrypts and hides your card information in the event the ATM machine or merchant encounters a data breach. Plus, the new debit card will allow you to use your card at millions of locations worldwide to withdraw funds or make purchases.
An ATM card may only be used to withdraw funds from your account at participating ATM machines or make purchases using your PIN at participating retailers (most grocery stores and gas stations). A debit card allows you to withdraw funds from your account at any ATM machine that accepts Mastercard. Additionally, you have the freedom to make purchases at any retailer that accepts Mastercard, with the funds for the transaction automatically deducted from your checking account.
No, this is not a credit card. Credit cards use a line of credit to determine the amount you can spend using the card and you are billed later for purchases. A debit card uses your checking account balance to determine the amount you’re able to spend and the funds are automatically deducted from your checking account.
Yes, you may use the debit card the same way as you used your ATM card to withdraw funds from an ATM or with specific participating merchants. However, the MasterCard purchasing feature requires a checking account. We encourage you to open a checking account with Ventura County Credit Union to enable all the features your new debit card has to offer.
You may continue using your new debit card the same way as your previous ATM card. However, you may now use your debit card with millions of retailers worldwide to make purchases that will automatically be deducted from your checking account.
