Scareware Scam Alert

Ventura County Credit Union (VCCU) is alerting members to a scareware scam recently impacting our community.

What is a Scareware Scam?

Scareware scams use fake computer pop-ups or warnings claiming your device is compromised or under investigation. The goal is to create fear and urgency so victims act quickly without asking for help.

How the Scam Works

  • Pop-ups claiming your computer is “locked” or flagged
  • Instructions to call a fake support number
  • Demands for immediate payments
  • Requests for cash, gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency
  • Claims your financial institution cannot be trusted

Key Red Flags to Watch For

Be cautious if you or someone you know experiences:

  • Sudden fear of arrest triggered by a computer pop-up
  • Pressure to act immediately or keep details secret
  • Requests for payment using:
    • Cash
    • Gift cards
    • Wire transfers
    • Cryptocurrency
  • Instructions claiming banks or credit unions cannot be trusted

Important Reminder

Legitimate law enforcement agencies:

  • Do not contact you via pop-ups
  • Do not demand payment to avoid arrest
  • Do not request payment in cash, gift cards, or cryptocurrency
